Loaded Man
“DO NOT PROGRESS” reads the sign in the front
The loaded man imagines none, builds none, and fears change.
Above is what I am currently living through, a society of inanimate apathetic structure that is mostly ignorant towards technology and progress in general. Well we don’t choose the geography and era of which we are born! Unfortunately the place and time of our existence is still relevant, meaning for example if you’re in the USA and not in the EU you’re probably better off, but the question is why such difference is still important in the 21st century with the advent of technology? Wasn’t the promise of the new age that there will be equal opportunity for everyone on the planet?
Well we all somehow know why the answer to the question above is a big NO. The thing is we were and still are looking at the wrong place. What I mean is if there was something to blame it is the Loaded Man, as we all have some place for him in ourselves, he is the old man that doesn’t let go of obsolete tradition, the old culture of trying to predict every step of the way, and who’s most of all terrified of risk. The Loaded Man wants stability and determinism, and will fight for it. he’s aggressive towards progress and change, he says he knows things and he for sure doesn’t like uncertainty.
He has promises too; by mentioning safety and security he promises that it is worth while to advocate for certainty. That certainty is better for everyone, who thinks people are insane if they do accept a degree of uncertainty in their life and work.
Growing up with computers and video games like any other one of you who might be reading this I felt the disconnect from others that didn’t seem to understand why this fascination with a box of electronics that made it so enjoyable to stare at a CRT monitor for hours is even a thing. While the counter culture is almost always apparent in music, art and fashion, computers were THE counter culture as it was infused with music, art, fashion and more. By bringing this up and so much more that I won’t get into just yet, I want to point out that we grew up experiencing uncertainty, the joy of figuring out something in that little box was so massive that we were looking for more uncertainty, let alone fearing it!
That is called curiosity;
The Loaded Man has no sense of discovery and curiosity.
The Loaded Man is risk-averse.
The Loaded Man doesn’t understand what the scaling law is, and trust me he doesn’t want to.
To fulfill the Techno-Optimist Manifesto there’s no place for the Loaded Man.
By the recent events unfolding in tech, I’ve been contemplating a path out of this wasted place, I’ve been learning and developing my skills in order to get myself somewhere that obsessive attention to science and technology isn’t stifled. I made this blog to walk myself through this journey and as a reminder of my current situation and to make sure I don’t let my brilliant thoughts go to waste (jk) :)
After going through this boring neural noise of mine, congrats you’ve made it. I won’t be bothering you for long now, just for the last word remember it is going to be epic experiencing the singularity.
